Excerpt from recently updated Operation Upshot-Knothole

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M65_Atomic_Cannon

Picatinny Arsenal was tasked to create a nuclear capable artillery piece in 1949. Robert Schwartz, the engineer who created the preliminary designs, essentially scaled up the 240mm shell (then the maximum in the arsenal) and used the German K5 railroad gun as a point of departure for the carriage. (The name “Atomic Annie” likely derives from the nickname “Anzio Annie” given to a German K5 gun which was employed against the American landings in Italy.) The design was approved by the Pentagon, largely through the intervention of chief of the Ballistics Section of the Ordnance Department’s Research and Development Division, Samuel Feltman, and a three-year developmental effort was begun. The project proceeded quickly enough to produce a demonstration model to participate in Dwight Eisenhower’s inaugural parade in January of 1953.

The cannon was transported by two specially designed tractors, both capable of independent steering in the manner of some extra-long fire engines. Each of the tractors was rated at 375 hp, and the somewhat awkward combination could achieve speeds of 35 miles an hour and negotiate right turns on 28 ft wide, paved or packed roads. The artillery piece could be unlimbered in 15 minutes and then returned to traveling configuration in 15 minutes more.

On May 25, 1953 at 8:30am local time, the Atomic Cannon was tested at Nevada Test Site (specifically Frenchman Flat) as part of the Upshot-Knothole series of nuclear tests. The test–codenamed Grable–was attended by then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Arthur W. Radford and Secretary of Defense Charles E. Wilson; it resulted in the successful detonation of a 15 kt shell (warhead W9) at a range of 7 miles. This was the first and only nuclear shell to be fired from a cannon.

Subsequent to the successful test, there were at least 20 of the cannons manufactured at Watervliet and Watertown Arsenals, at a cost of $800,000. They were deployed overseas to Europe and Korea, often continuously shifted around to avoid being detected and targeted by opposing forces. Due to the size of the apparatus, their limited range, the development of nuclear shells compatible with existing artillery pieces (the W48 for the 155mm and the W33 for the 203mm), and the development of rocket and missile based nuclear artillery, the M65 was effectively obsolete soon after it was deployed. However, it remained a prestige weapon and was not retired until 1963.

It’s all a miracle, when you come to think of it.

All of it.

Billions of years ago, out of nothing, a universe evolved from a sound. The vibration of this “big bang” still continues to expand.

A planet evolved out of the masses of dead planets that would support life. As far as we currently know, no other planet in our galaxy supports life. There are rumors of space visitors but few of us have ever seen them, or their magnificent ships. It’s all hearsay, and since pictures can be doctored and governments tend to suppress things in a reflexive way, the more we think about it, the more confused we get.

Millions of creatures on this planet; some of them in the deepest recesses of the ocean; some alive in the depths of the soil; some flying in the air; some leaping across the tree tops; some slithering down the rocks; and then, of course, there’s us, living in concrete jungles, a species so intelligent that our closest biological parallel, the monkey, has the intelligence similar to that of a three-year-old human being.

We not only have an awareness of what is going on in our neighborhood but we have some pretty good ideas of what the rest of the galaxy looks like, as well as the universe as a whole. We have also developed enough mathematics and instruments to show us the smallest of things, a subatomic particle. To our surprise, we have found that it isn’t a thing at all, but a cloud of energy, a probability pattern that appears to dance in and out of existence and may even travel back and forth in time.

Where did all these creatures, so many, so spectacular, and so astonishing at times, come from, and why are they here anyway? What, for example, is the destiny of a rat? an earthworm? a culture of bacteria? Do they have a higher purpose, too, or are they just here to breed, consume, excrete, and die?

But it gets stranger still.

Biologically, you had a high probability of not being here in the first place.

Out of millions of sperms that completely happened to miss the egg, you happened to be the one who made that biochemical “handshake.” This, in turn, created a massive replication of very specialized cells that formed itself into a completely organized biological system of some trillions of cells. For the most part these trillions of cells appear to get along together and effortlessly run on autopilot for decades, maybe even three-quarters of a century.

And while all of this has happened and is still happening, you aren’t, as far as you can tell, taking an active role in running the show. Your liver, without a thought from you, seems to know exactly what to do to keep you around despite that extra shot of Vodka you took to cheer yourself up yesterday.

Again, out of billions of people, it only took the probability of two to meet to bring you here. In fact, those two people may not even have gotten along very well with each other; but still, you’re here, despite all the arguments they’ve had and may still be having with each other. Somehow you snuck in when they were in a good mood.

Spiritually, too, there was not much of a chance that you would show up here, either.

Assuming there is a spiritual dimension, there is probably a long waiting list to get a human body. The odds of getting one must be as astonishing as winning the lottery. After all, if there are billions here already, and all souls never die, then there must be an astronomical number in the other dimension. Since space-time is infinite, assuming they even have space-time there, the number of souls may rival the number of stars in the universe.

Out of all possible experiences, you had a select number that have shaped your personality to be the way it is. And out of the 60,000 or more thoughts you have had every day of your life, there are only a select few that you acted on to make your day the way it is today.

It’s all so strange and mysterious that there is a group of us, called scientists, dedicated to looking into it, and this group has become so specialized because there is so much information that now very few of us even know what they are talking about.

Another group has formed as well, called philosophers, who try to piece all the disciplines together to create a big picture, but even this group has become overwhelmed and broken up into splinter units, and we will never ever again have the grand schemes of a Plato, a Kant, or a Spencer. The idea of a grand unified theory of life has all but been abandoned. Of course, there are still a few renegades, like Ken Wilber, who still like to write a brief history of everything, but even these attempts are more about creating huge sweeping classifications, then really explaining anything. It’s not anybody’s fault really,
there is just too much to consider and still too much to discover to allow a neat, overall pattern to be envisioned.

Then there are other groups, called politicians, who work hard on writing the rule books based on the prevailing ideas of world domination. And, they are followed quite closely, by people whom we will politely call industrialists, who are trying to do the same thing, except that they use a different kind of paper to determine the rules on how the rest of the species should live.

But, of course, the quest for power, does not stop there. There are also the armed forces, the environmentalists, the activists, the musicians, the theologians, and every other imaginable social cluster that is trying to weave a coherent pattern out of their own particular world-view.

The main difficulty everyone is having is not getting a clear idea of what is going on.

In the days of ancient Greece, a sapient homo sapient, like Aristotle, could embrace a complete world view. He impressed everyone for centuries as appearing to know something about everything.

But today, we know, for sure, that he didn’t really know that much. Ironically, the awe that centuries of scholars had held him in was mainly due to the fact that very few people were willing to look into anything deeply at all. In fact, those who did ended up getting crucified or burned at the stake or some other gruesome finish.

Fortunately, along came epochs like the Renaissance and the Age of Reason where human curiosity finally broke the bonds of collective stupidity and original inquiry became acceptable again.

This, in itself, took on a massive momentum. After centuries of intellectual suppression, in this century, we ended up figuring out and inventing more than in the entire history of the human race. Today, the rate of knowledge is expanding at such a rapid rate each day that no one can keep up with it anymore.

A multi-talented individual, a “universal man” like Leonardo Da Vinci or Isaac Newton will never be known again. Unfortunately, this has happened not only because of the rate of expansion of knowledge but because toleration for genius has also faded. For example, someone like William Sidis, who in 1910, at age 11, lectured Harvard Mathematical club on “Four-Dimensional Bodies,” spent most of his adult life hiding from the vituperation of the popular press.

Albert Einstein did not have a great start either. However, after being scorned by the university system and being forced to take the menial job of a patent office clerk, he managed to break free of the prejudice against intelligence by coming up with such startling ideas that the dozen or so people who understood what he was talking about embraced it and he became the first really smart celebrity.

But even Albert Einstein, after his few shocking revelations, spent most of his life in bewilderment. He constantly argued with Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, and the ever growing army of the exponents of Quantum Physics. In this battle of wits, he never really gained any ground because the mathematical and experimental evidence kept on showing the world of the very small to be constantly more bizarre than anyone had ever previously imagined.

Albert Einstein argued that “God does not play dice.” He believed that a grand, logical, aesthetic design should explain everything, but the evidence kept on piling up to show that God was indeed playing dice all day long.

Speaking of dice, even your own life, when you come to think of it, has been filled with many improbable interventions that rescued you from certain disasters, gave you insight when you needed it most, and created an entire pattern when you look back at it. No doubt, at the current moment, you’re witnessing another role of the dice, and despite how rational and sensible you’re trying to be things are working out in a most unusual way.

The probability of anything happening the way it has happened is so unlikely that about the only statement one can make about living on earth is that it is all a miracle.

At best, we only have a vague idea of what is really going on, and we have a way of muddling up our facts and inventing our own versions to explain the gaps, which only adds to the confusion. And we are not alone in this quest to keep things as befuddled as possible. Despite the astonishing discoveries of neuroscience, all educational systems throughout the world still operate on roughly the same educational paradigms invented a century or two earlier. And some even fail to rival that of the 17th Century.

Ironically, despite the beauty of this entire scheme of life on Earth, our internal agitation, both as individuals and as a culture, appear to have taken over for the most part. It appears that we are all simultaneously wrecking as much havoc as possible while crying for help. This is not a cynical comment. Evidence for it is as close as the nearest newspaper or Television or Radio News Channel.

Perhaps the greatest miracle is yet to come. At the current rate of overpopulation, pollution, nuclear arms escalation, genocidal outbreaks, archaic educational systems, rampant militarism, the machinations of multinational corporations, religious dogma, social unrest, economic spirals, environmental disasters, and the disappearance of entire species of flora and fauna, it’s going to take another miracle to keep the Earth itself from total collapse. Again, there are rumors of this as having happened before, and there are talks of civilizations like Atlantis and Lemuria which appear to have disappeared without much of a trace, apart from archeological artifacts, which could also be explained in any other number of ways. Like the notion of life on other planets, we have, at present, no clear idea if a flourishing civilization once existed before we showed up. (And, if we assume the idea of reincarnation, we may be the very same rascals who messed things up in the first place.)

In conclusion, then, whatever we make of the prevailing ideas of the earth, its confused inhabitants, and its possible future, one thing is rather clear: everything that exists has happened out of a huge improbability of it ever occurring in the first place.

What will it take for us, then, as a species, to appreciate the miracle of life and have more of it, not only for ourselves and other life-forms, but for generations of sentient life yet to come?

Soviet battle equipment seems to be popping up all over the world, but by far the most concerning of USSR hardware, is the Short range SCUD missile and the SA-8 platform. What are the ranges of the weapons and what others types are there, this can include Warsaw pact and post-WSP weapons. How? Is it even possible for someone be able to obtain a compatible warhead or weapon and activate it with a ranged missile asset Directly from Russia or its military?

The SS-1c SCUD is a single-stage, short-range tactical ballistic missile, using storable liquid propellants. It is transported, and fired from a TEL based on a MAZ-543 wheeled (8 x 8) chassis. The SCUD was designed for targets such as marshaling areas, major storage dumps, and airfields. The SCUD, which has a maximum range of 300 km, has been deployed in three variants: (S-1b) SCUD A, (SS-1c) SCUD B, and SCUD D. The primary difference between each of these variants is their guidance system and resulting CEP.

The SCUD A and SCUB B have a rudimentary inertial guidance system using three gyroscopes and have a CEP of 450 meters. The SCUD D has an active radar terminal seeker to refine the aim point as the warhead approaches the target, and a CEP of 50 m. The warhead separates from the motor and fuel tank assembly following motor burn-out to increase warhead stability and accuracy. All of the SCUD variants are capable of delivering the same warheads: HE, chemical, and nuclear. The MAZ-543 TEL gives the SCUD missile system greater road mobility. It reduces the number of support vehicles required, and still preserves a great choice in selecting off-road firing positions.

The SA-8 GECKO is a single-stage, solid-fuel, short-range, low-altitude, all-weather SAM system. The TELAR (transporter erector launcher and radar) vehicle is a six-wheeled design designated BAZ-5937. The SA-8a (GECKO Mod 0) high acceleration missile (Factory Index number 9M33) has a launch weight of about 130 kg. Maximum speed is Mach 2.4; minimum altitude is 25 m, maximum effective altitude 5000 m. The minimum range is 1500 m and the maximum range 12000 m. Against an F-4 Phantom target the warhead’s lethal radius at low altitude is 5 m and is fitted with proximity and contact fuses. In 1980 a newer missile, the SA-8b or GECKO Mod 1, was introduced into service. Contained in a rectangular launch box it has improved guidance and speed characteristics to give an increased maximum range of 15000 m.

The warhead weight of both missiles is 19 kg. The reloading time is five minutes. Combat deployment time is four minutes with system reaction 26 seconds.

The surveillance radar of the LAND ROLL operates in the H band and has an effective range of around 30 kilometers against a typical target. The tracking radar is of the pulsed type and it operates in the J band with a range of 20 to 25 kilometers. The two I-band guidance radars make it possible to launch two missiles at the same target, each one responding to a different frequency to frustrate ECM.

Mounted on the top of each missile guidance radar is an LLLTV/optical assist system for target tracking in low visibility and heavy ECM. LAND ROLL is also known to have a short-range target acquisition capability.

The vehicle is fully amphibious, being propelled in the water by two water jets at the rear of the hull. The vehicle is fitted with an air filtration and overpressure NBC system together with IR systems for the commander and driver.

There are at least three major families of SA-8 launch vehicles. The first has a very blunt nose, and may be a pre-series prototype. The standard production type for the SA-8a has a sharper nose, and there appear to be sub-variants of this vehicle with minor changes in the detail of hull fittings.

The SA-8b vehicle is basically similar to the SA-8a vehicle mentioned above aside from the launcher details to accommodate six missile canisters.

There are also indications that a distinctly different SA-8b launcher may exist, with a reconfigured rear end. In 1991 SA-8b TELs were seen with an additional small sized radar antenna fitted above the surveillance radar. It is possible that the antenna may be associated with a new IFF system.

The Russian military-industrial complex markets many of their weapon systems worldwide. Add to this the fact that many countries who have this equipment also sell some of their stocks leads to proliferation of many systems.

The SCUD Surface to surface missiles are of particular concern, mostly because a variety of countries, most notably North Korea have modified and improved them – and sell them to whomever has the money.

How to build and use a nuclear reactor! Included is two great designs for efficient and safe reactors. These things are not cheep! But the make so much energy that they are totally worth it! :D Just be careful if you are experimenting, you could blow up your entire base and the surrounding area! XD With the single reactor design you can run it endlessly and refill it immediately when it runs out (Kelmoir’s design). With my three chamber design you can run it for one full cycle and then you have to let it cool down completely before refilling.

A great reactor planner: http://www.talonfiremage.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/reactorplanner.html

Is it a good design or is it antiquated?
Could it be upgraded or is it just too old?

It is a basic 20th century design Boiling Water Reactor. check this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oyster_Creek_Nuclear_Generating_Station
here’s another view http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/12/09/oyster-creek-nuclear-deal-draws-fire/
To specifically answer your question, it is an old but good and safe design. It would be too expensive to update to be like today’s designs. The criticism seems to be centered around its use of water without cooling towers.

NICE EXPERIENCE AT RETAIL STORES

Birth of Retail Industry

We all know what is fashion is all about .Basically fashion symbolizes attitude or nature of the person. Fashion is changing with a speed of light. All fashion conscious people wants change in there wardrobe with the same speed. Some fashion lovers are regular shoppers and they frequently visit different fashion destinations. There are number of reasons which contribute jointly to enhance retail culture in India like rise in young population, handsome salary packages, nuclear families and increase in working female population all these factors will enhance the shopping capacity of normal public too. Another feather in the retail cap in India is allowing 51% Foreign Direct Investment in single brand outlet. Nobody is interested to do shopping from conventional markets due to limited variety, stale stock and heavy price tags at the same time supermarkets have wide range of products like apparels and accessories, cosmetics and toiletries, bag and baggage, grocery, travel and leisure under one roof and public enjoys low cost quality goods with very little chances of duplicity, no problem of bargaining and most important in crowded metro city retail stores are having good parking place. But at the same time different small local kirana shop’s will assume these retail stores will end there earnings, more impact of foreign companies and they will end community shopping but I think this is absolutely wrong perception because in India retail is the largest source of employment after agriculture there are nearly 12 million retail outlets in India and this will score India as a highest retail store density and retail stores and malls are still confine to big cities where as in small towns there are only kirana shops so even kirana shop merchant’s can able to purchase material at low price from retail shops and then sale them in small towns and earn profit. Some retailers also traps Indian thinking and develop discount stores in order to attract bargain loving Indian public and some are offering extra discounts and mega sale during festive season like Diwali, Id, and Raksha-Bhandan etc.

Now days all type of public with no difference of caste, creed and income levels moves towards retail stores. In India retail industry is growing like anything, that’s why          some foreign retail companies are already sharing Indian retail market revenue like Nautica US lifestyle opened the store in Pune, Tata and Woolworth tie up opened stores in Mumbai and Malad ,Walt Disney had ties up with Devyani International Ltd,Dubai based Damas Jewelry and Flemeningo International’s Indian division are interested to start  duty-free shops in the country, for selling products like jewelry and watches and few big retail giants like Wal-Mart tie up with Bharti are also interested to spreading there roots in Indian markets for seeking higher profit returns, France’s Auchas $50 million dollar chain of grocery and consumer durables are keen to open stores in India, HAS (Hayel Saeed Anam Group) a Yemen based company are planning to come to Indian market with a tie up plan with Reliance.

Demand for New Innovative Technology

We all are convinced by all above facts but there are still some problems in retail stores. Firstly lots of time are wasted in billing even in festive season and in weekdays shopping time are much less than billing time and secondly problematic to choose right size of outfits and matching accessories. Although visual merchandizing of stores are too good, convenient and entire range of products are visible to customers for there choice .Some of the retail companies like Pantaloon Retail India limited (PRIL) are using various types of software for e.g. JDA® Software for store planning and visual merchandizing, but main problem is trailing different sizes, colors and patterns of outfits standing in a long queue outside the trail rooms. Even this type of waiting is much more painful with small kids because they get irritated even after one or two trials. Choosing a proper fitted birthday dress for children of age group of 4 – 8 years is more like a war with no weapons. Sometimes trailing white garment is normally not allowed in maximum retail stores this seems that purchasing white garment suppose to be a crime and another confusion arises when we bring five or six dresses in the trail room it is difficult to remember how we look in each dress. To overcome above problems sometimes retailers design one model according to this customer is allow to trail only three garments and they can spend average 10-20 min in the trail rooms still it is really very dissatisfied to trail only limited number of garments and still there partners that are there parents, friends or relatives in crime also wait near the never ending queue outside the trail room to offer their opinion.

Billing is Problematic

In retail stores there are number of billing counters still billing is so much time consuming only reason behind this are Bar Code Readers only gadget used for billing in almost every retail store in India. No doubt Bar Code Readers reduce the time spend for billing and increase the accuracy. Like one of the common problem which we all face at billing counters is suppose in case of missing tags gentleman at the billing counter abruptly stopped billing and rushed 2 floors above or below the billing counter to get another product and used its tag to determine the price, this is not the end there are still other:

Problems in the Bar Code Readers

  • Single item scanning at one time
  • Kept the item at line of sight.
  • Wear and tear in the bar code strip.
  • More human involvement.
  • Much more time consuming

Birth of Wireless Gadget ? RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Device)

As entire globe is busy in innovations and inventions so why not retail industry. RFID is one of the outputs of the innovations in retail industry. There are number of software companies who are developing different types of RFID applications specifically for retail industries for e.g. WIPRO solutions develop WIPRO retail only to fulfill retail customer demand, Origin products contains huge list of only retail products like RFID tags , POS reader and handheld readers etc. It is basically a small chip somewhat similar to chips used in our mobile phone. This is consisting of a tag, transponder, and power source. Tag emits short frequency radio ways which is the part of the light spectrum and it is received by the transponder and information written on the tag wirelessly transferred to the system connected amount of data stored in the tag vary in different types of tags some can store upto 2 KB on the other hand some low cost disposable tag can able to store only 96 bits. Some tags are small like rice grain ad enclosed in glass covering and some are big like a credit card and embedded by plastic covering. Some can be reused and others are disposed of after use.

Tags are of different types according to type of frequency utilized by the tag .There are three types of tags like LF(Low Frequency),HF(High Frequency) and UHF(Ultra High Frequency) and distance of data transmission is like just 1 foot for LF tags , read less than 3 feet in HF and more than 3 feet for UHF Tags.  Power is utilized by the power-source present with the tag. According to orientation of power source there are two types of tags active and passive. Passive tags are supplied with external battery no such battery is present in active tags. Active tags have long read range as compare to passive tags because they have own power source but some times due to there higher cost constraint they are ignored by various retailers.

Choice of type of tag used is depend upon number of reasons which is taken under consideration by the firm. Type of the product is also one of the reasons for selecting type specific type of the tag for e.g. liquid and metal both show repelled behavior for RF(Radio Frequency) so for the liquid like shampoos etc normally passive tags are used and as metal reflect RF so tag is placed small place apart from the commodity .

Advantages of RFID over Bar Code Readers

RFID is automatically reduces all the problems of Bar Code Readers and increase the accuracy and reduces the time spend for billing. There are lots of advantages of RFID over Bar Code Readers like some of them are:

  • No line of sight is required.
  • Group of items are scanned at one time.
  • No wear and tear in the chip.

RFID technology calculates the total price of the commodity in the cart automatically and this will speed up billing hence checkout process and eradicate problems in the billing register and increase overall customer satisfaction level. RFID is not only used in billing it is very much useful in inventory management and unauthorized movement because misplaced items and out of the stock are main problems in the inventories these can be solved by mounting RFID chips in the shelves so automatically if item is misplaced or below reorder level automatically buzzer will alarm the store personnel’s and  gate antennas reads all the items at the exit door and if the item is not properly billed in that case automatically alarm raises and we can control theft by employees , customers etc.

WOMEN SAY NO TO SHOPPING ? Mall Voyeurism

Three walled Changing room

Source: http://www.gabriellogan.com/fitting-rooms

Even trailing is like a nightmare for young girls, female staff and women’s also there are number of news related with trial room voyeurism in different malls. This mall voyeurism is most disagreeable in women sopping experience. Above picture proves the fact that these type of three walled changing room is so much risky for female customers as they are open from the top anybody can easily peeped in. Even by all efforts if we have chosen correct size outfit again a long queue at billing counter .All these problems can be eradicated by some magic don’t you think and that is one and only one RFID (Radio Frequency identification device) a wireless magician. So now in coming future after using RFID at billing counters time spend  for billing reduced manifolds.

NO MORE Trialing

Huge crowd standing outside the trial rooms so again requirement of some jadoo for retail stores is just like jadoo of Koi Mil Gaya i.e. Magicmirror as name suggest something similar to magical mirror of  fairy tales

Magicmirror is a virtual mirror virtually means it seems even though it is not there. Magicmirror enables us to see you wearing particular picked up outfits without even putting off the outfit. Magicmirror is a RFID enabled mirror

present in trail rooms of retail stores in coming future. When customer brings the garment inside the trial room it digital display automatically displays description of the garment, other available sizes and colors and also suggest matching accessories. There is an another option if there is some problem with the size so customer is able to send the request from the mirror only and message directly transferred to the PDA (Portable Digital Assistant) of store employees and then they provide personnel assistance to the customer, this will create personalized environment for the individual customer and enhance customer’s faith for the retail store which will create strong and loyal relationship with the firm. This magicmirror will bring end to the long queue outside the trail rooms and also stops incidents of trail-room voyeurism. Castle Bravo was the code name given to the first U.S. test of a so-called dry fuel thermonuclear device, detonated on March 1, 1954 at Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands, by the United States, as the first test of Operation Castle (a longer series of tests of various devices). Unexpected fallout from the detonation—intended to be a secret test—poisoned the crew of Daigo Fukuryū Maru (“Lucky Dragon No. 5″), a Japanese fishing boat, and created international concern about atmospheric thermonuclear testing.
