We speak to former nuclear industry executive Arnie Gundersen on the fallout from Fukushima, the design failures of the Mark 1 nuclear reactor used at Fukushima and many U.S. power plants, the economics of nuclear energy and the battle over nuclear power in his home state of Vermont. Gundersen is a former nuclear industry senior vice president who has coordinated projects at 70 nuclear power plants around the country. He is the chief engineer at Fairewinds Association and co-wrote the new Greenpeace report, “Lessons from Fukushima.”

Michael J. Keegan of the Coalition for a Nuclear Free Great Lakes talks about dangers of nuclear energy power and the opposition to the license renewal for the Fermi 2 plant in Monroe, as well opposition to a Fermi 3 plant. His presentation was made at the International Roundtable on “Nuclear Threats to the Great Lakes and Transition to Clean Safe Energy” on May 14, 2011, in Dearborn, Michigan (USA).
Congressman Nadler denounces Republican efforts to gut federal regulations on nuclear safety standards, choosing instead to put public safety, community health, and the environment at risk. Nadler offered an amendment which would preserve the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s ability to strengthen nuclear safety regulations in the face of corner-cutting being pursued by the Republican majority. With millions of Americans living within the potential fallout zones of nuclear plants, and with the lessons from Japan’s Fukushima reactor still fresh in our minds, now is not the time to loosen regulations on the entire nuclear industry.
